Dental Exam

A comprehensive dental exam will be completed by Dr. Leah or Dr. Kyle at your initial dental visit. At each regular check-up appointment, your hygienist and Dr. Leah or Dr. Kyle will complete each of the following:

  • X-rays are essential for the detection of tooth decay, as well as any tumors, cysts, and bone loss. X-rays also help determine tooth and root positions, which aid in decision making.

  • Your hygienist will check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer. You can read more about oral cancer screening here.

  • Your hygienist will check for early signs of gingivitis, inflammation around the gum tissues, and periodontal disease, or bone loss associated with chronic irritation of the gum tissues. Your hygienist will help treat these diseases and restore your mouth to a healthy state.

  • Our doctors will check each tooth and x-ray for signs of tooth decay, or cavities. She will discuss the best options for treatment of this decay.

  • Our doctors will always check the status of existing fillings, crowns, and dentures that you have, to ensure they are all in the best condition as possible.

Professional Dental Cleaning

Professional dental cleanings (dental prophylaxis) are performed by our Registered Dental Hygienists. Your cleaning appointment will include each item mentioned above, as well as the following:

  • Plaque is a sticky film that forms on our teeth. It is composed of bacteria, food debris, and saliva. Calculus cannot be removed by tooth brushing or flossing alone, it must be removed by professional dental instruments used by your hygienist. If left for a long time, calculus leads to periodontal disease and bone loss.

  • A specific polishing cup and paste will remove stain and superficial debris remaining on the teeth.

  • Fluoride is recommended for all children, as well as adults with a high risk of cavities. It strengthens and re-mineralizes the teeth, to prevent future cavities.

  • Our hygienists are excellent educators at the personalized regimen that each patient needs to follow to maintain their oral hygiene. They will discuss with you different methods of brushing and flossing to determine the easiest and most effective way for you to maintain your beautiful smile!
